It's time to think about protecting our kokako again - we have 2 weekends coming up in July.

Join us for fun weekends in the Tunawaea area of the NW Pureora Forest. We stay in comfortable farm stay accommodation on Ollivers Farm not far from the baiting area, and have a great social time - often with a shared dinner on the Saturday night. Transport is via car pooling, with different groups typically travelling there on Thursday or Friday (including Friday evening), and returning home on Sunday.

The Tunawaea kokako project has been running for 8 years now, so as you would expect, our visits are usually rewarded by seeing and hearing a great range of birdlife, including hearing those elusive kokako.

The 2019 season will be starting at the end of July, when we will have a weekend for track maintenance of our pest control lines, also bait packing ready for bait distriubution at the start of September.

Bonus Season Start Actiivities

Unfortunately DOC has had to postpone our 1080 drop until at least 2021. This means our possum numbers will be increasing and to stop them eating all our bait we have been asked to carry out special possum baiting this year. This comprises of a "pre-feed" to get them used to the idea, followed by a strike feed of Feracol a couple of weeks later. Feracol is concentrated Vitamin D - not actually a poison - but it has a lethal effect on small animals.

We are going to do the pre-feed on certain tracks on the weekend of July 19-21 and put the strike feed out on our regular weekend of July 26-28.

We still have to do track maintenance, a rat count and bag all the bait so it will be full on and we need plenty of helpers!

And an extra bit of fun will be positioning a new rat monitoring line across a number of the Ranginui Hill (Bird) tracks.

Please let Liz know if you can come for either or both weekends as soon as possible as she is away for 2 weeks early July.
