Winter Trip - Easy/Medium
Enjoy iconic Nelson and Marlborough tracks without the summer crowds
Duration: Saturday 3 August 2019 to Wednesday 14 August 2019 (12 days)


Abel Tasman Coast Great Walk - golden beaches and lush coastal native bush

Saturday: Fly to Nelson, shuttle to Marahau, walk to Anchorage Hut - 4hrs
You need to be ready for the shuttle by 10.15am
Sunday: Walk via Bark Bay to Awaroa Hut - 8.5 hrs
Monday: Cross the Awaroa Inlet and continue to historic Whariwharangi Hut - 5.5hrs
Tuesday: Climb over a saddle to Wainui Inlet - 2 hrs. Shuttle to Pohara Beach. Stay Pohara Beach Top 10 Holiday Park     
  Inland Track - regenerating and undisturbed forest where tui, bellbirds and other wildlife can be seen. Occasional granite outcrops offer excellent views of the coast.
Wednesday: Shuttle back to Wainui. Climb Gibbs Hill with great views en route to Awapoto Hut -5.5hrs
Thursday: Follow an undulating route with a side trip to Porter Rock to Castle Rock Hut - 6hr
Friday: Descend to Marahau - 5.5hrs. Shuttle to Nelson. Stay Bridge Backpackers      
  Queen Charlotte Walkway - experience the spectacular Marlborough Sounds. We will use the water taxi pack transfer service so we will be walking with daypacks only.
Saturday: Travel by Intercity bus from Nelson to Picton and water taxi to Ship Cove. Walk through largely mature forest to Resolution Bay - 2hrs.
Sunday: Walk mainly near the shoreline to Camp Bay - 7hrs.
Monday: A big climb and descent with magnificent panoramas to Portage - 8hrs.
Tuesday: Tramp via Mistletoe Bay and beech forest to Anakiwa - 8hr. Water taxi to Picton. Stay Tombstone Backpackers
Wednesday: Travel by Intercity bus from Picton to Nelson and fly home.
An alternative is to catch a ferry to Wellington Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning
Accom: Abel Tasman Coastal Track - all Great Walk huts with no gas
Inland Abel Tasman Track - 2 standard huts
Queen Charlotte Walkway - cabins and backpackers $148. There is a "basics" shop on the first night plus the option to dine out on the last 2 nights. Only emergency shelter will be carried
Off track accommodation - Pohara Beach Top 10 Holiday Park $31.50, Bridge Backpackers in Nelson $28 and Tombstone Backpackers in Picton $26
