The club is responsible for baiting an important kokako breeding area around Tunawaea Stream, near Rangitoto Station in the King Country. It is from here that kokako have been successfully translocated to the Hunuas and the Waitakeres  Our baiting target is principally the rats that are a major threat to successful chick rearing in the spring and early summer.

Volunteers from the club visit the area in the first weekend of the month from August through December, and again in March as a pre winter cleanup. Transport is via car pooling ($30), and for Friday and Saturday nights we stay in very comfortable and well equipped farmstay accommodation ($20 total for the two nights).

The baiting tracks are well marked and vary from easy to fairly fit, tramping for 4-6 hours. Maps are provided and you need a largish backpack to hold about 10kg of bait + your own gear.

We have a good group of regular volunteers, but could always use more! If you feel you could spare a weekend and get involved with this conservation project, please get in touch. You will enjoy the farm, the fabulous accommodation, the company, and being part of a valuable conservation project.

This weekend is for bait uptake checking and topping up to our 685 bait stations.
