Mavora Greenstone Caples - Christmas Trip

Duration: Saturday 5 January 2019 to Friday 11 January 2019 (7 days)
Details: This is a Moderate / Easy round trip commencing from the southern end of South Mavora Lake. It follows well formed tracks and uses mostly hut based accommodation.

It is in an area with superb mountains all around, commencing with following the South and North Mavora Lakes, and then travels through to the Greenstone area. A planned side trip is to walk to the Key Summit on the nearby Routeburn Track. Days will not be rushed - we will take time to enjoy our surroundings.
Saturday: From Te Anau shuttle to South Mavora Lakes Campsite. Walk alongside South and North Mavora Lakes to Careys Hut – 4.5 hrs
Sunday: Walk up the Mararoa Valley to Taipo Hut – 5-6 hrs
Monday: Cross the saddle and descend the Passburn valley to Greenstone Hut - 4-5hrs
Tuesday: Continue up the Greenstone Valley to McKellar Hut - 5 hrs
Wednesday: Continue past Lake McKellar to camp near the junction of the Greenstone and Caples tracks. Day walk - if conditions are suitable - via Greenstone / Routeburn tracks to Key Summit and back
Thursday: Follow the Caples Track over the McKellar Saddle and down the Caples valley to Mid Caples Hut - 5-6 hours
Friday: Continue down the Caples Valley to the road end
Shuttle at midday to Queenstown, ETA around 2pm.
Flight home can be booked from late afternoon, OR stay in Queenstown for a few days (your own arrangements)

Flights: If you are also on either of the Dusky trips, this follows immediately
Otherwise, arrange to arrive in Te Anau on Friday 4th January. 
Depart Queenstown any time from 4.50pm January 11th onwards
Transport In: Tracknet from Te Anau to South Mavora Lake. 
Transport Out: Glenorchy Journeys from Greenstone track end to Queenstown
Dusky party members will be taken from Te Anau to central Queenstown
If you fly in on January 4th, you will need to take a bus that will get you to Te Anau that day
Shuttle from Queenstown to airport Jan 11th - own arrangements

Jan 4th Te Anau accommodation $36 Steamers Backpackers, Te Anau

All nights except Monday are hut based, but tents must be carried because of the time of year
The 3 huts are Serviced and 2 huts are Standard, so take 4 green hut tickets and 2 blue ones (in the event we don’t camp on Wednesday), or an Annual Hut Pass
Jan 11 etc Queenstown - own arrangements, but check with Vicky if other trip members are also staying overnight
