Duration: Friday 22 March 2019 to Sunday 24 March 2019 (3 days)
Details: Visit and climb the sacred mountain of Ngati Porou. Hikurangi is New Zealands highest non-volcanic mountain with two summits, male and female. First mountain to see the sunrise in the world.
Friday: Meet at Gisborne Airport 5pm. Short dinner stop in Gisborne. Drive to Kariaka Marae  at Ruatoria. 2 - 2.5 hours.  Cup of tea on arrival.  Bring sleeping bags and breakfast.  $30 per person.
Saturday am: Drive to Mt.Hikurangi carpark. Turn off SH35 onto the gravel Tapuaeroa Valley Road and follow the signs for Pakihiroa Station. 40 mins.  Walk up 4WD road to carvings - 9kms uphill, 3- 3.5  hours.

A series of nine carved art works created for the millennium. A local Ngati Porou guide will give a commentary on the story behind of each carving relating to Hikurangi and what it means to Ngati Porou. Cost of local guide is $37.40 per person

Walk up to hut and settle in. 30 mins. Don't forget your little daypack to take up to Hikurangi summit  with your snacks, drink  and raincoat in etc. Plus your camera.
Saturday pm or Sunday am: Climb Hikurangi. 4- 4.5 hours return to hut.  If the weather is suitable on Sunday start walking around 4.30-5am and be first to see the sunrise from the top.
Sunday pm: Descend to carpark and return to Gisborne / Auckland.
Note: Hut is already booked with Ngati Porou Trust. $15 per person for Saturday night. Sleeps 10. Space for two more people who are happy to use their own inflatable mattress on the floor.  NO CAMPING

  Transport to Gisborne – your responsibility to arrange and pay: 
Option 1:  Fly Auckland to Gisborne return. (Approx. $400 return). Flight to arrive Gisborne by 4.30pm Friday. Return flight after 5pm Sunday.
Option 2: Private car. Drive to Gisborne airport. Arrive by 4.30pm Friday. Return leaving Gisborne after 5pm Sunday. (Suggest paying your driver 10c. per km)  Long term parking at airport $10 for 12 - 24 hours per car.
Transport Gisborne to Mt. Hikurangi:

By  mini van from Gisborne airport - $180 per day plus diesel. Van Driver:  TBA

Trip Cost: All inclusive Gisborne to Gisborne return - $120 per person. Payment is required in full when you book. This cost include van hire, fuel, Friday marae accommodation, Saturday hut accommodation, Ngati Porou guide to the carvings
Note 1: If there are less than 12 people booked on the trip, per person costs may increase.
Note 2: Limited refund options, but via a waiting list we will try to fill your place if you need to cancel.
