Day Trip - Sunday 13 October 2013

Eighteen trampers set out on what could have been a very exposed walk around Manukapua Island on the Kaipara Harbour. High winds were expected, but did not eventuate.

Pines along the rough vehicle entry track had recently been felled. After a rather bumpy ride, Big Blue prudently got parked up just before a large quagmire. This meant walking farther than expected to the very tidal island and dire warnings were given to those found lagging, of a wet return (swimming). Possibly due to the warning, the expected four hour walk was completed in two and a half including an early lunch.

The tide was still fully out as we returned to the bus so off we drove to Atiu Park up the road for an exploration. This area has only recently been purchased by Auckland Council and is a mixture of working farm, estuary, old homestead and woolsheds, and bush-laden gullies of both native and exotic trees. It’s very well tracked and marked for walkers and MTBers alike and is a great asset to our city.

It's not known as Big Sand Is for nothing.

This was a rather out of the way trip involving as much driving as walking, but well worth the effort. The pick up/drop off point at Des Swan drive is highly recommended for those living on the North Shore. Another well attended trip, and thankfully the weather held.
