Northern Kaweka

You MUST obtain approval from the leader before booking this trip. They'll give you the trip code - without the correct code your booking will be rejected.

Only ATC members can book a trip up to 3 weeks before a trip commences. After that time, non-member bookings may be accepted.

An extended long Auckland Anniversary weekend in marvellous tramping country. Something for everyone, as long as you’re up for climbing the odd hill or two….

Easy Medium

Friday from Makahu Road end walk in to Te Puia Lodge 26 bunks, 3 hrs. In afternoon visit Mangatainoka Hot Springs and return, 90 mins.

Saturday head up the Makino River flats and pick up the track to Makino Hut (6 bunks) 6-7 hrs.

Sunday to Middle Hill Hut (6 bunks, camping) 5.5 hrs. This section crosses 3 major gullies with steep 150-200 metre vertical descents and climbs back out.

Monday out to Makahu Road, 2.5 hrs.

Medium

Friday from Makahu Road end walk in to Te Puia Lodge then head up the Makino River to camp, 6 hrs. Optionally visit Mangatainoka Hot Springs on the way, 90 mins return.

Saturday  take track to Mangaturutu Hut (750m vertical climb) then continue around to Tira Lodge (Venison Tops) 12 bunks, 7 hrs.

Sunday take the track to Whetu and head down Camp Spur to Middle Hill Hut (6 bunks, camping) 6.5 hrs.

Monday out to Makahu Road, 2.5 hrs.

Medium Fit 1

Friday from Makahu Road (Middle Hill track-end) climb to Middle Hill Hut then up Camp Spur to Whetu (total 1150m vertical climb) and on to Ballard Hut (4 bunks, camping) 7 hrs.

Saturday  take track to Tira Lodge then on to Mangaturutu Hut (6 bunks) 6.5 hrs.

Sunday descend the ridge to the Makino River and head down the river valley to Te Puia Lodge, 6 hrs. Optionally visit Mangatainoka Hot Springs on the way, 90 mins return.

Monday out to Makahu Road, 2.5 hrs.

Medium Fit 2

Friday from Makahu Road (Middle Hill track-end) climb to Middle Hill Hut then along to Kaweka Flats Biv (2 bunks, camping) with a short side trip to the historic Iron Whare, 7hrs.

Saturday up Dick’s Spur, south along the Kaweka Range to Kaweka J then down Back Ridge and track to Rocks Ahead Hut (4 bunks, camping) 9hrs.

Sunday up past Tira Lodge and Ballard Hut, over Whetu and down to Makino Hut (6 bunks), 9 hrs.

Monday to Te Puia Lodge and out to road end, 4 hrs.

Hut Fees: Annual Hut Pass or 1 blue DoC ticket required for all huts except Te Puia Lodge (3 tickets) and Kaweka Flats Biv (free)
