An extended long Auckland Anniversary weekend in marvellous tramping country. Something for everyone, as long as you’re up for climbing the odd hill or two…. Medium Fit 1Friday from Makahu Road (Middle Hill track-end) climb to Middle Hill Hut then up Camp Spur to Whetu (total 1150m vertical climb) and on to Ballard Hut (4 bunks, camping) 7 hrs. Saturday take track to Tira Lodge then on to Mangaturutu Hut (6 bunks) 6.5 hrs. Sunday descend the ridge to the Makino River and head down the river valley to Te Puia Lodge, 6 hrs. Optionally visit Mangatainoka Hot Springs on the way, 90 mins return. Monday out to Makahu Road, 2.5 hrs.
