Note change of dates.
We’ve re-scheduled this trip a bit earlier than previously proposed. This will give us longer daylight hours and less chance of snow and ice on Travers Saddle – so we may not need ice axe and crampons, to be confirmed.
Saturday 29 April Arrive Nelson early to mid-afternoon, shuttle to St Arnaud (2 hours), walk in to Lakehead Hut, 3 hours.
Sunday 30 April From Lakehead Hut to Upper Travers Hut, 8 hours.
Monday 1 May From Upper Travers Hut over Travers Saddle to West Sabine Hut, 5 hours. Optionally continue to Blue Lake Hut, +2.5 hours.
Tuesday 2 May Blue Lake Hut. Explore the area – Blue Lake, Lake Constance or Moss Pass – or spend the day in your sleeping bag.
Wednesday 3 May From Blue Lake Hut to Sabine Hut, 7-8 hours.
Thursday 4 May Option 1: From Sabine Hut to Angelus Hut, 6 hours, 1400 m climb. Option 2: From Sabine Hut to Speargrass Hut, 5 hours.
Friday 5 May From Speargrass Hut / Angelus Hut to Mt Robert car park, 3 hours and 5 hours respectively. Shuttle to Nelson and accommodation at Tahuna Motor Camp.
Saturday 6 May Fly back to Auckland.
Notes:
- Most huts are big so getting a bunk should not be a problem at this time of year. However, a mattress may be a good carry.
- Annual Hut Pass or DOC hut tickets required.
- Book a flexi fare for the return flight on Saturday 6 May.
