Trip Full and bookings closed This is a reschedule of the trip planned for 2022. Some details may change as the arrangements are finalised. This trip is rated as a Medium trip. It commeces from Makarora, on the Wanaka to Haast road. Walk up the Young Valley to the spectacular Young Basin, then over Gillespie Pass to Siberia valley, with a spare day to visit picturesque Crucible Lake. Then down to the Wilkin River at Kerin Forks. After crossing the river, continue upstream to Top Forks for a couple of nights stay to check out some superb lakes. Jetboat out down the Wilkin River to Makarora from where the ATC Bus will take the party to Wanaka. Duration Sunday 5 February to Thursday 16 February, 2023. Accommodation A mix of huts and camping, last night in Wanaka. Travel The ATC Bus will be used - either travel on it from Auckland leaving Sunday February 5th or fly to Christchurch on Waitangi Day February 6th. On the return trip the bus will be travelling to Christchurch for the Safari trip - so fly back to Auckland from Christchurch or stay on for the Safari trip. Costs: To be confirmed Preparation: Because our Summer trips can involve longer days and bigger terrain than we Aucklanders may be used to, they do require a prior commitment to fitness and endurance training - especially in the 2-3 months immediately prior to the trip. At a minimum this means multiple multi-day (ATC or similar) trips with some decent hills in them. This will enable you to complete and enjoy your chosen trip and is important for Medium trips and vital for Medium-Fit and Fit trips. When initially enquiring about a trip, ask the leader what sort of fitness will be required.
