Medium trending Medium Fit

Not suitable for beginners, this tramp is mostly off-track.

Ascend Wairere falls track to Wairere stream. A quick side trip and return to view the top of the falls and outstanding views over the Waikato. Cross Wairere stream (wet feet inevitable) and pick up a long abandoned track heading north west along the range. When level with Sheehan stream, leave this old track and head south west on a hunters trail. Drop steeply off the range parallel to Goodwin stream, then back to the bus on the main track. Duration 6 hours.

Leader: Terry Chubb Ph 021 870 158

Medium Easy

The track initially follows the fast-flowing, boulder-strewn Wairere Stream. It passes through very attractive forest to a view of the towering Wairere Falls (153m). The track continues steeply up to the top of the falls. After viewing the falls from the top platform, go past a large open camping area and continue north alongside a delightful stream with the chance of a swim if time permits. Return to the bus by same track. 5-6 hours.
