Three walks the Club hasn’t done before – two on the Mamaku plateau and climbing Te Tapui peak. Accommodation at Opal Hot Springs with option to eat out in Matamata on Saturday night.

Saturday drive to the Kaimai Plateau, walk Woods Mill Track, ending at cascading Waiomou Stream. Option for the more adventurous to cross the stream and climb the ridge on the old, now overgrown route towards Hiwiroa, the highest point in the Mamakus. Beautiful mature forest here, but we’ll turn around when we hit the impenetrable supplejack jungle. Return to bus, 3-4 hrs.

Drive through Mamaku Village to the Mokaihaha Ecological Area on South Rd and walk the loop track through superb mature podocarp forest and past a small lake, 2 hrs. Return to base with time to enjoy the hot pools. Both walks rated Easy.

Sunday Medium From access point on Piakonui Rd climb to Te Tapui peak and return. The route is untracked and unmarked, mostly open bush but with occasional bush-crashing. Careful navigation and route finding is needed, so we won't be travelling fast. 4-5 hrs.

Easy Take Te Tapui loop track to Maungakawa summit and return, 3-4 hrs.
