An extended long Auckland Anniversary weekend in marvellous tramping country. Something for everyone, as long as you’re up for climbing the odd hill or two…. Easy MediumFriday from Makahu Road end walk in to Te Puia Lodge 26 bunks, 3 hrs. In afternoon visit Mangatainoka Hot Springs and return, 90 mins. Saturday head up the Makino River flats and pick up the track to Makino Hut (6 bunks) 6-7 hrs. Sunday to Middle Hill Hut (6 bunks, camping) 5.5 hrs. This section crosses 3 major gullies with steep 150-200 metre vertical descents and climbs back out. Monday out to Makahu Road, 2.5 hrs.
