This weekend we will be staying in Mangawhai and walking a number of tracks in the area that are a bit beyond the limits of our day walks. Key tracks in the area are the Waipu Caves / Scenic lookout, the Te Araroa (TA) route out to the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway and down to Mangawhai Heads – a spectacular section of walkway, the Waipu Coastal Walkway and an interesting northern loop in the Te Arai Regional Park which nicely complements the southern loop walked on a day walk recently.

Saturday First off we visit the Waipu Caves area in a karst limestone reserve and panoramic views once we have climbed up through the reserve. The caves can be visited also, an optional bonus in this area. They are wet and slippery inside, good torch and sturdy footwear required - you will get wet feet and more - BUT ... the glow worms are amazing! Bring a good torch, also a walking pole is recommended.

From there we join the TA route across farmland through to the Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway, finishing at the Mangawhai Heads township.

Sunday We return to north of the Brynderwyn Hill to walk the Waipu Coastal Walkway from Langs Beach through to Waipu Cove - coastal views, rocky bays, limestone Pancake Rocks and more. We then drive over to the Te Arai Point carpark and walk a loop track taking in the northern part of the regional park, a beach walk, and up and around over Te Arai Point. A fairy tern breeding area, so keep your eyes peeled for them.

Accommodation: On Saturday night we will be staying at the Campbell Park Youth Camp https://www.campbellpark.org.nz/ in multiple cabins (there is also a tenting option on request). Either bring your own dinner, or walk to a variety of restaurants around 10 minutes away.
