Daylight saving has started and the godwits are flying in from Alaska – an ideal time to overnight at the Miranda Shorebird Centre / Pukorokoro! Wednesday 27th SeptemberDepart the club garage at 9.15am and drive to Waitawa Regional Park. From carpark hike to Mataitai bay and onto the wharf. Continue around the coast to Waitawa Bay for lunch (swim a distinct possibility) then climb up to Pawhetau Pa and along the ridgeline across the farm park to return to the bus. Approx 10km. Drive along the coast to the Shorebird centre. Accommodation for 15 people is spread over 3 bunkrooms – bring sleeping bag. Shared bathrooms, kitchen, lounge (www.shorebirds.org.nz) . Bring food for 2 lunches, 1 breakfast and 1 dinner (keep it simple). From the centre a trail leads along the shell banks to bird hides providing a great opportunity to view birds, especially around high tide (evening and morning). A visit to the hot pools at Miranda village highly likely after we arrive. High Tide ~ 6pm / 6am Thursday 28thPack up by 9am and drive a short distance to Waharau Regional Park. Tramp the Waharau Ridge Line Track – medium, approx. 14km with 400m altitude gain / loss. (Note if track is closed then we will hike the trails at Tapapakanga Regional Park instead). Return to the garage by late afternoon.
